Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, has called for urgent government action following the recent attack in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, which left several people dead.

Speaking after the incident, Aondoakaa lamented the repeated violence in Benue communities, stressing that residents are tired of living under constant fear and counting casualties. He urged both federal and state authorities to intensify security measures to protect lives and property.

“The people of Benue are weary of counting bodies after every attack. We need urgent and decisive action to stop these killings,” Aondoakaa said.

The Ukum attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued parts of Benue, often linked to clashes between armed groups and local communities. Witnesses reported that gunmen invaded villages, leaving destruction in their wake.

Local leaders have expressed frustration over what they describe as inadequate security presence in rural areas. They argue that despite repeated appeals, attacks continue to occur, forcing many residents to flee their homes.

Civil society organisations monitoring the situation have also raised concerns about the humanitarian impact. They warn that displacement, loss of livelihoods, and trauma are worsening conditions for affected communities.

Analysts say Aondoakaa’s intervention reflects growing pressure on government agencies to address insecurity in Benue and other parts of the Middle Belt. They note that the persistence of attacks undermines confidence in state institutions and threatens regional stability.

The Benue State Government has condemned the Ukum incident, promising to work with security agencies to prevent further violence. Officials said investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.

Community members, however, insist that more proactive measures are needed. “We cannot continue to live like this. Our people deserve peace and protection,” a local youth leader said.

Security experts argue that tackling the crisis requires a combination of stronger intelligence gathering, deployment of personnel, and engagement with communities to address underlying tensions.

For Aondoakaa, the priority is ensuring that government action translates into real protection for citizens. He emphasised that Benue people have endured too many tragedies and deserve lasting peace.

The Ukum attack has once again drawn national attention to the broader challenge of insecurity in Nigeria, where communal clashes, banditry, and insurgency continue to affect several states.

As calls for urgent intervention grow louder, stakeholders agree that restoring peace in Benue will require sustained commitment from both federal and state authorities, alongside community cooperation.
