Police Bust Illegal Factory Producing Adulterated Alcohol in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have uncovered a suspected illegal factory producing adulterated alcoholic beverages in Badagry, Lagos, arresting one suspect and sealing the premises. The discovery underscores growing concerns over counterfeit drinks and public health risks in Nigeria’s beverage market.

Police Raid in Badagry
The Lagos State Police Command has shut down a suspected illegal factory allegedly involved in the production and packaging of adulterated alcoholic drinks in the Yafin area of Badagry, Lagos State. The operation, carried out by police operatives following credible intelligence from members of the public, led to the arrest of a 48-year-old man identified as Anaebo Emeka Hilary.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, the raid was conducted after reports indicated suspicious activities at the facility. Officers recovered large quantities of adulterated alcoholic beverages, empty bottles, assorted wine labels, and various production utensils believed to have been used in the illegal manufacturing process.

Adebisi confirmed that the factory was immediately sealed, and the suspect taken into custody for interrogation. “The recovered items have been moved to the station for further investigation,” she said, adding that laboratory analysis would be conducted to determine the composition and potential health hazards of the seized products.

Police Response and Public Advisory
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the officers for their swift action and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations aimed at tackling criminal activities across the state.

Fatai emphasized that the command would continue to intensify surveillance on illegal manufacturing outfits, particularly those producing consumables that pose health risks to the public. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines.

“The safety of Lagosians remains our top priority. We encourage citizens to provide timely and credible information to help us curb criminal enterprises that endanger lives,” the commissioner stated.

Public Health and Economic Implications
The discovery of the adulterated alcohol factory has raised renewed concerns about public health and consumer safety. Experts warn that counterfeit alcoholic drinks often contain harmful chemicals such as methanol, which can cause blindness, organ failure, or death when consumed.

Nigeria’s beverage industry has long struggled with the proliferation of fake products, particularly in informal markets. Regulatory agencies like the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have repeatedly cautioned consumers to verify product authenticity before purchase.

The Lagos police operation adds to a series of recent crackdowns on illegal beverage producers, including similar raids by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Badagry earlier this month. These coordinated actions highlight the growing inter-agency collaboration to combat food and drink adulteration nationwide.

Police sources disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a wider network distributing adulterated drinks across Lagos and neighboring states. The command also plans to liaise with NAFDAC to verify the authenticity of the recovered labels and packaging materials.

Authorities have assured the public that anyone found culpable will face prosecution under Nigeria’s Food and Drug Act and other relevant criminal statutes.

The Lagos State Police Command’s swift action in Badagry reflects growing vigilance against counterfeit consumables threatening public health. As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain alert and support law enforcement efforts to rid the state of illegal production facilities.
