The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has embarked on nationwide enforcement against all alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET bottles below 200 millilitres, marking the full implementation of the Federal Government’s ban on the products.
The sweeping crackdown is taking place simultaneously across the six geopolitical zones, following the earlier closure of manufacturing facilities found to be producing the banned alcoholic drinks in violation of regulatory directives.
NAFDAC’s enforcement teams are targeting markets, bars and motor parks nationwide, areas identified as major distribution points for the sachet alcohol products the agency has sought to eliminate from circulation.
The agency said offenders found manufacturing, distributing or selling the banned products would face prosecution, as part of a broader push to curb what health authorities have described as a public health risk linked to cheap, easily accessible alcohol sachets.
The ban has been a long running policy priority for NAFDAC, with health advocates linking sachet alcohol consumption to rising cases of substance abuse, particularly among young people and low income Nigerians.
NAFDAC said the nationwide raid would continue in the coming weeks, with the agency urging manufacturers to fully comply with the ban or face regulatory and legal consequences.
