Rivers State – Suspected cultists shot and killed the zonal commander of a local security outfit codenamed the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Security Planning and Advisory Committee in Omoku, identified as Ozomela Stephen Nwaocha, on Tuesday evening.
Three women, including the commander’s sister, who were with him during the attack, were also shot dead by the suspects, according to police confirmation on Wednesday.
The assailants reportedly attacked the vigilante commander while he was relaxing outside his compound with the women along Oba Road in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the attack, with the Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, saying investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings.
The targeting of a security outfit commander raises concerns about the safety of community security personnel operating in areas with a history of cult related violence in Rivers State.
Security agencies are expected to intensify operations in the Omoku area following the attack, with residents calling for stronger protection for community security volunteers going forward.
