Kano State – A 45 year old man and his teenage daughter have died after falling into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State, in a tragedy that has left the community in mourning.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi, saying the rescue team successfully recovered both victims from the well.
According to the statement, both victims were brought out unconscious and were later confirmed dead, with their bodies handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial arrangements.
Preliminary findings indicated that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the well first, while her father reportedly entered the well in an attempt to rescue her, only to also lose his life in the process.
The tragedy highlights the ongoing danger posed by abandoned wells and boreholes in rural communities across Nigeria, where such structures are often left unsecured after falling out of use.
Community members have called for greater awareness around the risks of abandoned wells, with the Fire Service urging residents to properly cover or fill in disused wells to prevent similar tragedies.
