The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested an airport security officer and two accomplices after an attempt to smuggle gold out of Nigeria. The arrests followed an operation linked to a multibillion naira gold smuggling case at Kano airport, according to reports published on June 11, 2026.
The suspects allegedly tried to move gold valued at about N4.4 billion through the airport. The EFCC said the operation uncovered a wider smuggling network and that investigators were working to identify all participants.
The anti graft agency has not yet disclosed the full identities of the suspects in the available reports. However, the case has drawn public attention because it involves airport staff and a high value mineral shipment that was allegedly meant to leave the country illegally.
Smuggling Network Under Probe
The EFCC said the seizure is part of its wider effort to stop mineral smuggling and financial crime. Gold smuggling has remained a major issue in northern Nigeria, where illegal mining and weak border controls continue to fuel criminal activity.
Investigators are examining how the suspects obtained access to the cargo system and whether other officials may have helped the operation. The commission said any person found culpable would face prosecution under the law.
The case also highlights pressure on airport security checks at major hubs across the country. Aviation workers and security operatives are under growing scrutiny as agencies try to block illegal movement of precious minerals and cash.
Anti Graft Drive Continues
The EFCC has stepped up arrests and enforcement actions in recent months as part of its anti corruption campaign. Previous reports showed the agency also moved against alleged money laundering involving Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria staff and others.
The latest arrest adds to a growing list of high profile cases involving smuggling, abuse of office and illicit wealth. Officials say the agency will continue to track criminal proceeds and disrupt networks that exploit public institutions.
