Police Barracks Plunge Into Decay as Officers Live in Squalor
SHARE

Across Nigeria, police officers continue to live in dilapidated barracks plagued by poor sanitation, overcrowding, and structural decay, raising questions about welfare and morale in the nation’s security system.

Investigations reveal that many barracks in Lagos, Abuja, and other major cities are in dire condition, with leaking roofs, broken sewage systems, and inadequate water supply. Residents say the situation has persisted for years despite repeated calls for government intervention.

Officers and their families describe daily struggles with unhygienic surroundings. In some barracks, refuse piles up due to poor waste management, while stagnant water creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes. “We serve the country, but look at where we live. It is shameful,” one officer lamented.

The poor state of police housing has been linked to declining morale among officers. Analysts argue that living in squalor undermines the dignity of the force and affects performance. They note that welfare is a critical component of effective policing, and neglecting it weakens national security.

Civil society groups have also raised concerns, stressing that the conditions reflect broader issues of neglect in Nigeria’s public institutions. They warn that without urgent reforms, the police force may struggle to attract and retain competent personnel.

Government officials have acknowledged the problem but say funding constraints remain a challenge. In recent years, promises have been made to renovate barracks and improve welfare packages, but progress has been slow.

Security experts argue that addressing the decay requires more than cosmetic repairs. They call for a comprehensive housing policy for police officers, including modern facilities, proper sanitation, and sustainable maintenance structures.

Residents of affected barracks say they often resort to self-help measures, pooling resources to fix broken facilities. However, they admit such efforts are limited and cannot replace government responsibility.

The situation has sparked debate about priorities in Nigeria’s security spending. While billions are allocated to equipment and operations, welfare and housing for officers often receive less attention. Critics say this imbalance undermines the effectiveness of the force.

For now, police officers and their families continue to endure harsh living conditions, hoping that renewed attention from policymakers will lead to meaningful change.

The state of Nigeria’s police barracks remains a stark reminder of the challenges facing the country’s security system, where those tasked with protecting citizens often struggle to live in dignity themselves.
