Osun State – The National Peace Committee (NPC), through its secretariat, The Kukah Centre, has identified 15 local government areas in Osun State as high risk for election related violence ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
Osogbo and Irewole local government areas were flagged as the most vulnerable, with Iwo, Boripe, Ife Central and Ife East also featuring among the 15 local government areas classified as high risk in the assessment.
The findings were contained in a Political and Security Context Analysis presented to stakeholders during bilateral engagements supported by the European Union under the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria project.
The assessment is expected to guide security deployment planning ahead of the governorship poll, with authorities likely to prioritise additional personnel and monitoring in the flagged local government areas.
Election related violence has periodically marred governorship contests in Nigeria, with civil society groups and international partners increasingly working to identify risk factors ahead of polls rather than responding only after incidents occur.
The National Peace Committee is expected to continue engaging political parties and candidates in Osun ahead of the election, urging restraint and peaceful conduct among supporters in the identified flashpoint areas.
