Major General Fadewa has been named as Special Adviser on Homeland Security to President Tinubu

When a president creates a new security role and puts a retired military general in it, it usually means something is not working well enough with the existing structure. That is likely what is behind President Tinubu’s latest appointment.

The Appointment

Major General Fadewa has been named as Special Adviser on Homeland Security to President Tinubu. The announcement came on Monday, with the presidency describing the appointment as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s internal security intelligence and operations.

Why Now?

The timing tells a story. Plateau State has recorded more than 50 deaths from community attacks in just over a month. Bandits are still active across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina. IPOB-linked violence continues in the South-East. For a country dealing with security threats in nearly every geopolitical zone, having someone with dedicated responsibility for homeland security makes sense on paper.

The Special Adviser on Homeland Security is distinct from the National Security Adviser and the DSS chief. The expectation, sources suggest, is that Fadewa’s role will focus more specifically on intelligence coordination and internal threat analysis — areas where critics say Nigeria has had significant gaps.

Whether the appointment translates into measurable improvement on the ground remains to be seen. For now, it is a signal that the presidency is taking the pressure seriously.
