An aide to the Ooni of Ife has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to guarantee free and fair elections in 2027, stressing that credible polls remain central to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
The call was made in Osun State following the recent election, where concerns about electoral malpractice and voter intimidation were raised by observers. The aide emphasised that the credibility of future elections would determine public trust in governance.
He noted that Nigeria’s democracy has faced repeated challenges, including allegations of vote-buying, violence, and manipulation of results. According to him, the 2027 general elections present an opportunity for the government to restore confidence in the electoral process.

“President Tinubu must ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair, and transparent. Nigerians deserve to choose their leaders without fear or interference,” the aide stated.
Civil society organisations monitoring elections in Osun have echoed similar concerns, calling for stronger enforcement of electoral laws. They argue that reforms are needed to address recurring issues such as weak institutions, poor logistics, and inadequate security during polls.
Analysts say the appeal from the Ooni’s aide reflects growing pressure on the federal government to prioritise electoral integrity. They point out that credible elections are essential for political stability, economic growth, and Nigeria’s international reputation.

Community leaders in Osun also emphasised the importance of voter education and civic participation. They urged citizens to resist inducements and focus on electing leaders who can deliver good governance.
The aide’s statement underscores the role of traditional institutions in promoting democratic values. While not directly involved in politics, traditional rulers and their representatives often influence public opinion and advocate for peace and fairness.
As Nigeria looks ahead to 2027, the demand for credible elections continues to dominate political discourse. Observers believe that the government’s response to these calls will shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
For now, the appeal from the Ooni’s aide adds to the chorus of voices urging President Tinubu and relevant institutions to ensure that the next general elections reflect the will of the people.
