President Bola Tinubu has commended Team Nigeria for its 24 medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the performance as a reflection of the country’s sporting talent and pledging greater investment in sports development.

The President’s commendation comes as Nigeria’s athletics, powerlifting and other disciplines delivered a standout campaign in Glasgow, with the country recording multiple golds, silvers and bronzes across a range of events.

Tinubu said the achievement underscores the depth of talent within Nigeria’s sporting system, adding that his administration remains committed to strengthening infrastructure and support systems for athletes across various disciplines.

The pledge for greater sports investment comes amid broader conversations about Nigeria’s sporting infrastructure, with stakeholders repeatedly calling for sustained government funding to translate talent into consistent international success.

Sports administrators have welcomed the President’s commendation, expressing hope that the promised investment will materialise into concrete infrastructure and athlete support programmes ahead of future international competitions.

The Commonwealth Games performance adds to a strong year for Nigerian sports, with the country’s athletes continuing to compete at a high level across multiple international events throughout 2026.
