Former Kano State governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has shed light on his political alliance with Labour Party’s Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, speaking during a recent political gathering, explained that the partnership was driven by shared interests in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges and strengthening democratic governance. He noted that both parties were exploring ways to collaborate in order to present a stronger alternative to the ruling party.
“The alliance is not about individuals but about Nigeria. We are looking at how to build a platform that can deliver good governance and meet the expectations of Nigerians,” Kwankwaso said.

The NNPP leader also took aim at former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje and current governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, declaring that both had lost political relevance. He argued that their influence in Kano politics had diminished, citing recent developments within the state and their strained relationship with the electorate.
Kwankwaso’s remarks come at a time when political alignments are beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts say his comments reflect ongoing efforts by opposition figures to consolidate support and challenge the dominance of the ruling party.
Observers note that Kwankwaso’s alliance with Obi could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in the North and South-East, where both leaders enjoy significant grassroots support. However, questions remain about how the partnership will be structured and whether it will translate into a formal coalition.

Political commentators have pointed out that Kwankwaso’s criticism of Ganduje and Yusuf may signal deeper divisions within Kano’s political class. Ganduje, who currently serves as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has faced internal party disputes, while Governor Yusuf has been battling legal challenges to his mandate.
For Kwankwaso, the focus appears to be on positioning NNPP as a credible force in national politics. His alliance with Obi, if formalised, could provide a platform for both parties to pool resources and mobilise supporters across regions.
While the details of the arrangement remain unclear, Kwankwaso emphasised that discussions were ongoing and that the ultimate goal was to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. “We are committed to working with like-minded leaders who believe in justice, fairness, and progress for our country,” he added.
The 2027 elections are still more than a year away, but early political manoeuvres suggest that alliances and coalitions will play a major role in shaping the contest. Kwankwaso’s latest comments underline the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political scene, where partnerships can shift rapidly as parties seek to gain advantage.
