The attack was planned. The troops got there first.

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace foiled a planned bandit attack on communities in Plateau State this week, killing five suspected bandits during an intelligence-led operation. The military described the intervention as part of ongoing efforts to stabilise a state that has suffered repeated deadly attacks in recent months.

Acting on reliable intelligence, troops moved to intercept a group of armed bandits planning to raid communities in the Plateau State area. The operation resulted in the death of five suspects. No soldiers were reported injured. Weapons and equipment were recovered from the scene.

The intervention comes at a critical time for Plateau State. Since President Tinubu visited the state in early April and pledged an end to the killings, security forces have been under enormous pressure to demonstrate results. However, attacks have continued, making every successful interdiction especially important for public confidence.

Plateau State has recorded some of the highest civilian casualty figures from community attacks in 2026. Farming communities, mining settlements, and ordinary villages have been targeted repeatedly by armed groups. The violence has displaced thousands and disrupted the livelihoods of many more.

Furthermore, the attacks have often come at night — making it difficult for communities to defend themselves and for troops to respond in time. As a result, intelligence-led pre-emptive operations like this week’s intervention represent the most effective available strategy.

The Military’s Message

The Nigerian Army used the announcement to reinforce its commitment to protecting Plateau State’s communities. Troops remain deployed under Operation Enduring Peace, with patrols covering high-risk areas 24 hours a day.

For the people of Plateau, the news of five bandits stopped before they could act is a small but meaningful moment of relief. The work continues. And the military says it will not stop until the communities are safe.
