One of the most feared names in Nigeria’s northwest banditry crisis is no longer a threat.
Troops of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army killed notorious bandit leader Kachalla Kallamu in a targeted operation in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The military confirmed the killing in a statement, describing Kallamu as a major operational commander responsible for coordinating attacks on communities across the region.
Who Was Kachalla Kallamu
Kachalla Kallamu was not a minor figure. Security sources describe him as a senior bandit commander who had been active in Zamfara for several years. He was linked to multiple attacks on villages, kidnapping operations, and armed raids that terrorised farming communities in the area.
His elimination is therefore significant. Bandit networks in Nigeria’s northwest operate through a command structure. Consequently, removing key commanders disrupts operational planning, creates leadership vacuums, and forces surviving members to reorganise under pressure.
The Operation
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma executed the mission in Sabon Birnin LGA based on confirmed intelligence. The operation was precise and targeted. No civilian casualties were reported. Military sources say the troops located Kallamu after tracking his movements and closed in on his position.
The 8 Division has been at the forefront of anti-banditry operations in the north-west. Meanwhile, troops under Operation Enduring Peace foiled a separate planned bandit attack on communities in Plateau State in the same week, killing five suspected bandits in an intelligence-led operation.
What This Means for the Region
The northwest security crisis has been one of Nigeria’s most persistent challenges. Zamfara alone recorded 1,203 abductions in a recent reporting period — the highest of any state in the country. Progress, however, is happening. In 2025, operations across the north-west rescued over 1,000 kidnap victims.
For the communities that lived in fear of Kallamu, this news brings some relief. However, as security analysts note, bandit networks adapt. The fight is far from over. Still, today, one less dangerous man is operating in Nigeria’s northwest.
