Before the sun rose, the troops were already moving. Five gunmen did not survive the encounter.
Soldiers of the Nigerian Army, operating under Operation Enduring Peace, neutralised five suspected gunmen in a pre-dawn operation in Plateau State this week. The military described the intervention as intelligence-led, noting that troops had received credible information about the movement of armed elements planning to attack communities in the area.
How the Operation Unfolded
Acting on intelligence reports, troops moved into position during the early hours of the morning before the armed group could reach its target communities. Contact was made. A brief but decisive engagement followed. Five suspects were neutralised. No soldiers were reported injured in the operation, and no civilians were harmed.
Weapons and equipment were recovered from the scene. The military has not disclosed the specific location within Plateau State where the operation took place. However, the areas most affected by recent violence include Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Bassa, and Mangu local government areas, communities that have faced repeated attacks over the past several months.
Plateau State’s Ongoing Crisis
Plateau State has been one of the most troubled security environments in Nigeria in 2026. Since President Tinubu’s visit to the state in early April, when he pledged that the killings would stop, security analysts have recorded more than 14 separate attacks with over 50 civilian casualties. Despite military deployments, the attacks have continued.
Furthermore, the pattern of violence in Plateau does not fit neatly into any single category. The attacks involve multiple armed groups, inter-communal tensions, and economic grievances that have festered for decades. As a result, military operations alone cannot resolve the situation. They are necessary but insufficient.
What the Military Is Saying
The Army has used this week’s operation as an opportunity to reassure communities that Operations Enduring Peace remains active and committed. The neutralisation of five gunmen before they could carry out a planned attack is presented as evidence that intelligence-sharing and proactive deployment are yielding results.
For the communities that would have been attacked on that pre-dawn morning, the soldiers arrived in time. However, for the broader population of Plateau State, lasting peace requires more than pre-dawn intercepts. It requires a long-term political and economic settlement that addresses the roots of the violence. That work is still very much in progress.
