The Kogi State Government has confirmed the rescue of four students who were kidnapped while sitting for the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO) exams. The incident occurred in a community within the state, sparking fear among parents and residents.
According to reports, armed men invaded the examination centre and abducted the students during the test. Security operatives immediately launched a search operation, working with local vigilantes to track the kidnappers.
The government stated that the rescue was successful after hours of coordinated efforts. The students were freed unharmed and have since reunited with their families.
Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the development in a press briefing. He said Governor Yahaya Bello directed security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
Fanwo stressed that the government would not tolerate attacks on schools or examination centres. He assured residents that measures were being reinforced to prevent future incidents.
The rescue operation involved joint efforts by the police, military, and local vigilante groups. Officials explained that the kidnappers fled after security forces closed in on their hideout.
Authorities have intensified patrols around schools and examination centres across the state. The police also urged communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.
Parents and community leaders expressed relief at the safe return of the students. However, they called for stronger security measures to protect schools, especially during national examinations.
Education stakeholders warned that repeated attacks could discourage students and undermine confidence in the education system.
Kidnappings targeting schools have become a recurring challenge in parts of Nigeria. Analysts note that criminals often exploit vulnerable institutions to demand ransom or spread fear.
The federal government has repeatedly pledged to secure schools under the Safe Schools Initiative, but incidents continue to raise concerns about implementation.
The rescue of the four kidnapped NECO candidates in Kogi highlights both the resilience of security agencies and the persistent threat of school abductions. While the government has promised tighter security, stakeholders insist that long-term solutions must include community vigilance and stronger protection for educational institutions.
