The Nigeria Police Force has linked the heavy deployment of security personnel and barricades across parts of Abuja’s city centre in recent days to a planned protest, assuring residents that the measures are precautionary and aimed at maintaining law and order.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, said the operation is a routine security measure designed to safeguard lives and property amid a rise in protest activity within the Federal Capital Territory, adding that there was no cause for alarm.
The barricades, mounted at strategic locations across the city centre, have triggered significant traffic congestion, delaying thousands of motorists and civil servants, particularly around the Federal Secretariat and adjoining districts.
Iniedu said the heightened presence reflects Abuja’s status as the seat of government, home to diplomatic missions, key federal institutions and foreign investors, all of which require sustained visible security to maintain public confidence.
The police spokesman also disclosed that the Force has expanded its approach from purely intelligence-led policing to what he described as “intelligence-led community collaborative policing,” emphasising that intelligence gathering alone is insufficient to address evolving security threats without active community cooperation.
Authorities have not disclosed the specific protest that prompted the lockdown, though the measures follow a period of increased demonstration activity in the capital by various interest groups pressing government on unresolved welfare and policy grievances.
