LONDON / ABUJA — The decision by the Turaki-led PDP faction to clear former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole 2027 presidential candidate has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape. Global analysts and regional observers say the development reshapes the opposition race in fundamental ways.
The ADC was among the first to react to the news. The party said Jonathan’s possible return introduces a new layer of complexity for every political camp. It said his name still carries significant emotional weight among Nigerian voters across all regions.
“Jonathan’s possible return will shake the PDP, disturb APC calculations, unsettle Labour Party sympathisers, and force every political camp to rethink strategy,” the ADC said in a statement released on Tuesday.
International observers point out that Jonathan is a uniquely positioned figure in African politics. He is widely praised for conceding defeat in the 2015 election, an act seen as rare and statesmanlike on a continent where sitting leaders often refuse to hand over power.
What His Return Would Mean
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015. He oversaw significant growth in Nigeria’s GDP but also faced criticism for corruption, insecurity in the northeast, and the Chibok girls kidnapping. His concession of the 2015 election to Buhari remains his most celebrated moment.
Since leaving office, he has maintained a high diplomatic profile. He has observed elections across Africa, brokered peace talks in several conflict zones, and served as an ECOWAS envoy. His name is better known and more positively received internationally than those of most other Nigerian presidential aspirants.
Furthermore, his entry would immediately make the 2027 race a contest between known quantities. Tinubu and Jonathan are both experienced, recognisable, and capable of mobilising national coalitions. A head-to-head between the two would generate enormous domestic and international attention.
Uncertainty Remains
However, Jonathan’s silence remains the biggest variable. He has not confirmed his interest in the race. He did not show up to submit his nomination form or appear for screening. The PDP faction cleared him in his absence.
Analysts say the faction may be using Jonathan’s name to build momentum without his formal commitment. If he does not accept the nomination, the entire exercise could be a political embarrassment for the Turaki group.
The ADC noted that regardless of Jonathan’s own intentions, his name being in the conversation already changes how every other candidate must plan their campaign. Nigeria’s 2027 election is shaping up to be the most complex and consequential since the return to democracy in 1999.
