The National Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has raised alarm over a directive by Gambian authorities that could lead to the dismissal of 57 Nigerian employees working in a commercial bank in Banjul.

According to NiDCOM, the order, which reportedly mandates the termination of foreign staff in certain positions, has sparked anxiety among Nigerian workers who fear losing their livelihoods.

Families at Risk
For many of the affected Nigerians, the jobs in Gambia are not just paychecks but lifelines for families back home. Several workers told NiDCOM that they support dependents in Nigeria through their earnings, and the sack order could plunge households into financial hardship.

“We are not just numbers. Each of us has families who rely on us. Losing these jobs means children may drop out of school and households may struggle to survive,” one affected worker lamented.

NiDCOM’s Intervention
NiDCOM Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the situation as “deeply concerning” and assured that the commission is engaging with Gambian authorities to seek a resolution. She emphasized that Nigerians working abroad deserve fair treatment and protection under international labour standards.

Dabiri-Erewa also called for calm among the affected workers, noting that diplomatic channels are being explored to prevent mass job losses.

Broader Implications for Nigeria-Gambia Relations
The development has raised questions about bilateral relations between Nigeria and Gambia. Analysts warn that if unresolved, the sack order could strain ties between the two West African nations, especially given Nigeria’s longstanding role in supporting Gambia’s economy and governance.

Nigeria has historically contributed to Gambia’s workforce, with professionals in banking, education, and healthcare sectors. The sudden directive, observers say, risks undermining this cooperation.

Diaspora Concerns
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Nigerian workers abroad, who often face uncertain labour conditions. NiDCOM has repeatedly stressed the need for stronger bilateral agreements to safeguard diaspora workers from abrupt policy changes.

Civil society groups have urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts in protecting citizens working overseas. “Our diaspora is a vital part of Nigeria’s economy. Their welfare must be prioritized,” one advocacy group stated.

A Call for Dialogue
Stakeholders are urging Gambian authorities to reconsider the directive and engage in dialogue with affected workers and their employers. Labour unions in Nigeria have also expressed solidarity, warning that the sack order could set a dangerous precedent for other countries employing Nigerian professionals.

Hope Amid Uncertainty
Despite the looming threat, many of the affected Nigerians remain hopeful that diplomatic intervention will yield positive results. For them, the issue is not just about jobs but about dignity, fairness, and the right to earn a living.

As NiDCOM continues its engagement, the fate of 57 Nigerians in Gambia hangs in the balance—a reminder of the challenges faced by diaspora workers and the urgent need for stronger protections in cross-border employment.
