A special crack team deployed by the Inspector General of Police arrested a suspect identified as Ifechukwu Dennis in Benin City, Edo State, over his alleged involvement in the creation and circulation of a fake voice recording purportedly featuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, police confirmed at the weekend.

The recording, which had circulated widely on social media platforms before it was identified as fabricated, reportedly contained statements attributed to the President that he never made. Police said the circulation of such content posed a serious risk to public order and could be used to incite unrest or spread false information about government policy.

Investigators said the special team traced the origin of the recording through digital forensic analysis before moving to arrest the suspect at his residence in Benin City. The suspect is currently being interrogated to determine whether he acted alone or as part of a wider network involved in producing similar content.

Growing Concern Over AI-Generated Disinformation

The arrest highlights growing concern among Nigerian security agencies about the use of artificial intelligence tools to generate convincing fake audio and video content featuring public officials. Cybersecurity experts say such tools have become increasingly accessible, making it easier for individuals to create deceptive content that can spread rapidly before being debunked.

Furthermore, the National Data Protection Commission’s recent partnership with Meta to strengthen data protection and digital literacy was cited by analysts as one component of a broader response needed to address the spread of disinformation on social media platforms in Nigeria. However, civil liberties groups cautioned that enforcement against fake content must be carefully balanced against free speech protections, particularly given Nigeria’s history of using broad cybercrime provisions against legitimate critics of government.

Still, police insisted that the case against Dennis specifically involved the fabrication of content falsely attributed to the President, which they said was distinct from legitimate criticism or satire. Notably, the arrest follows a separate case in which an Air Peace crew member was prosecuted for running an identity scam targeting fans. Consequently, Nigerian law enforcement appears to be increasing its focus on digital fraud and disinformation cases alongside its traditional crime enforcement priorities.

Abuja Woman Found Beheaded in Uncompleted Building

In a separate and disturbing crime development, the body of a woman was discovered beheaded inside an uncompleted building in Abuja, according to reports. Police said an investigation had been opened to identify the victim and establish the circumstances of her death. In addition, the FCT Police Command said additional patrols had been deployed around uncompleted buildings in the affected district following the discovery. As a result, residents in the area have been urged to report any suspicious activity around abandoned construction sites to security agencies.
