Kidnappers Hold 20 Corps Members, Demand N5m Ransom Each
SHARE

Twenty National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have fallen victim to kidnappers who are demanding N5 million ransom for each abductee. The corps members, reportedly en route to their places of primary assignment, were intercepted by armed men who subjected them to torture while pressing their demands.

Relatives of the abducted corps members are said to be in deep distress, struggling to raise the huge ransom demanded. Many of the families have appealed to government authorities and security agencies to intervene, stressing that the amount is far beyond their financial capacity.

Security operatives have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers. According to sources within the police and military, joint operations are underway to track the abductors and secure the release of the victims. Officials have assured the public that every effort is being made to rescue the corps members alive.

The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of young Nigerians deployed under the NYSC scheme. The programme, designed to foster national unity and provide graduates with community service experience, has increasingly been overshadowed by insecurity in several parts of the country. Parents and stakeholders are questioning whether the scheme can continue in its current form without stronger security guarantees.

Reports indicate that the kidnappers have subjected the corps members to physical abuse to pressure families into paying quickly. Survivors of similar abductions have previously recounted harrowing experiences, including beatings and deprivation, aimed at breaking their resolve.

The federal government has condemned the abduction, describing it as an attack on Nigeria’s future leaders. Officials reiterated that negotiations with criminal groups remain discouraged, but acknowledged the urgency of saving the victims. The Ministry of Youth and Sports, alongside NYSC management, is said to be working closely with security agencies to coordinate rescue efforts.

Civil society groups and youth organizations have expressed outrage over the incident. Many argue that the abduction of corps members represents a direct assault on national development. Calls have intensified for the government to overhaul its security strategy, particularly in rural and highway areas where kidnappings are rampant.

Kidnapping for ransom has become one of Nigeria’s most pressing security challenges. The abduction of corps members underscores the vulnerability of ordinary citizens, especially young graduates deployed far from home. Analysts warn that if such incidents persist, participation in the NYSC scheme may decline, undermining its role in national integration.

Despite the grim situation, families and communities remain hopeful that the corps members will be rescued. Security agencies have urged patience, promising that operations are ongoing and progress is being made. For now, the nation watches anxiously, awaiting the safe return of the abducted youths.
