Nigerian troops bust IPOB-ESN enclave in Imo State, seizing machine guns and arms
SHARE

When Nigerian security operatives moved into a quiet corner of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area in Imo State, what they found was not the kind of thing you expect in a civilian community. Machine guns. A hidden base. Signs of an organised armed presence.

The Operation

Officers of the Imo State Police Command carried out a targeted operation in the Nguru area of Aboh Mbaise, dismantling what authorities described as a suspected IPOB/ESN enclave. The mission was intelligence-driven, meaning security forces had prior information about the location before moving in.

What Was Recovered

Among the items recovered were General-Purpose Machine Guns — weapons designed for military use, not the kind of arms that should be circulating in any community in the country. Their presence in a local enclave underlines how well-equipped some of these groups have become.

The Larger Challenge

The South-East security situation has been a major headache for Nigerian authorities for several years now. IPOB and ESN have been blamed for attacks on police stations, killings of security personnel, and disruption of commercial life across states like Imo, Ebonyi, and Anambra. The federal government has classified both as terrorist organisations. IPOB rejects that label.

Whether this latest operation will significantly dent the group’s capacity remains to be seen. But security sources say more operations are on the way.
