A Police Inspector identified as Dr Obodo Paul Ikechukwu, a PhD holder serving within the Nigeria Police Force, died on Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident in Enugu State allegedly involving a police convoy, with authorities launching both a manhunt for the fleeing driver and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Punch reported the fatal accident, describing the incident as deeply troubling given that the victim was himself a serving police officer. The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the death through spokesperson Obinna Ndukwe, who described the loss as tragic and pledged a meticulous inquiry into the circumstances.
Command Denies Police Convoy Involvement
Ndukwe said the command had launched a manhunt for the fleeing driver while the remains of the deceased officer were deposited in a mortuary. However, he clarified that there was no evidence at the time of publication establishing that a police convoy was involved in the fatal hit-and-run motor-pedestrian accident.
The death of a PhD-holding police officer in such circumstances drew attention to the risks faced by Nigerian security personnel not only from criminal actors but from traffic incidents that remain a leading cause of preventable death across the country. Nigeria records some of the highest road traffic fatality rates in Africa, with poorly maintained roads, inadequate street lighting, and reckless driving among the key contributing factors.
Call for Road Safety Reform Renewed
Civil society and road safety advocates renewed calls for the Federal Road Safety Corps to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly on high-speed urban roads where pedestrian visibility is poor and driver behaviour goes unchecked. Furthermore, colleagues of the deceased officer described him as a dedicated and intellectually accomplished member of the force who had pursued higher education while maintaining active police service, making his death all the more grievous. Notably, the incident came as the Inspector-General of Police was already publicly lamenting the rising number of officers being lost in the line of duty. Consequently, Dr Obodo’s death added another dimension to the week’s sombre reckoning with the risks Nigerian security personnel face.
