Lagos State – The Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos South West, Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Dr Ebenezer Adewole, has said the church has not been silent on Nigeria’s challenges, arguing that the real problem is that many people no longer pay attention to its message.
Adewole urged political leaders to see themselves as trustees of the people rather than custodians of personal wealth, saying genuine national transformation would only be possible when individuals embraced accountability and integrity.
The bishop spoke at a press conference at the Cathedral Church of Pentecost, Festac Town, Lagos, ahead of the first session of the Diocese’s inaugural Synod.
His remarks add to a recurring theme among Nigerian religious leaders this year, who have repeatedly called on political office holders to prioritise public accountability amid ongoing governance and corruption concerns.
Adewole’s comments come as the Diocese prepares for its inaugural Synod, an event expected to bring together clergy and lay leaders to deliberate on the church’s role in addressing Nigeria’s social and governance challenges.
The bishop said the church would continue to speak out on national issues, urging Nigerians to pay closer attention to its message on integrity and accountability in public life.
