The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released activists Randy Peter and Mama Pee after both honoured an invitation by the anti graft agency in Abuja, according to their colleague, Justice Cracks.

The activists were released shortly after midnight on Wednesday following several hours of questioning and were asked to return to the commission’s office on Thursday, with Cracks disclosing that the pair spent about 11 hours at the EFCC’s headquarters.

Concerns had mounted over the whereabouts of the duo earlier on Wednesday after a photographer associated with a presidential candidate’s earlier campaign revealed that they had yet to leave the commission’s office several hours after honouring the invitation.

Cracks, who accompanied the activists to the EFCC headquarters, shared updates on social media throughout the day, including a video recorded from the commission’s car park while waiting for their release.

The EFCC has not issued a detailed public statement on the basis for the invitation or the nature of the questions put to the activists during their extended stay at the agency’s headquarters.

The case adds to continued public attention on the treatment of civil society activists by anti graft and security agencies, with the activists expected to return for further questioning as directed.
