He promised goals. He delivered history. Kylian Mbappe is now the greatest scorer in the history of the French national team.
France defeated Senegal 3-1 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I opener at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 16. Mbappe scored twice and set a new all-time France scoring record in the process, moving to 58 goals for Les Bleus — surpassing the previous record held by Olivier Giroud. Bradley Barcola added a third for France. Senegal pulled one back through substitute Ibrahim Mbaye deep in stoppage time, but France had already sealed the win.
A Slow Start, an Explosive Finish
France were poor in the first half. Senegal were the better side, creating the clearest chances. Nicolas Jackson hit the post. Edouard Mendy had little to do. France coach Didier Deschamps admitted his side were disappointing in those opening 45 minutes.
However, the second half was a different story entirely. Mbappe opened the scoring in the 66th minute, finishing calmly from a defence splitting pass by Michael Olise. Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd minute with a delicate chip. Senegal pulled one back almost immediately through a brilliant individual effort. Then Mbappe had the final word — a sensational long range strike into the top corner in the 96th minute that sealed the win and the record.
What It Means for Africa
Senegal entered this match as one of Africa’s best hopes at the 2026 World Cup. The Lions of Teranga were competitive, dangerous, and unlucky not to lead at the break. As a result, the defeat will sting. However, their group stage campaign continues. Two more matches remain and Senegal are more than capable of recovering.
For Nigerian fans watching at home, the match carried its own emotional weight. Senegal are West African neighbours. Their performance in the first half gave the continent genuine hope. Furthermore, France’s brilliance in the second half was a reminder of the quality Nigeria will need to match when the Super Eagles eventually return to this stage.
The Record That Changes Everything
Mbappe is now France’s all-time leading scorer. He is also chasing Miroslav Klose’s World Cup record of 16 goals, having now scored 14 at the tournament. He is 27 years old. There are many more matches and many more records ahead.
France are already looking like the team to beat in 2026. Senegal will regroup. And the World Cup is now fully, undeniably alive.
