Team Nigeria set the first ever Commonwealth Games record in the Mixed 4x400m Relay in Glasgow on Friday, while Ruth Usoro qualified for the women’s long jump final on the same day.

The quartet of Edidiong Udo, Esther Joseph, Samuel Ogazi and Patience Okon George stormed to victory in their heat to set the new Games record in the event.

Usoro reached the long jump final after producing a season’s best jump on her very first attempt, further boosting Nigeria’s medal prospects across the remaining days of the athletics programme.

The mixed relay record adds to a strong overall showing for Nigeria’s athletics squad, which has delivered medals and record breaking performances across sprints, hurdles and relay events throughout the Glasgow Games.

Team Nigeria’s athletics contingent is expected to continue building on this momentum as the competition moves toward its concluding events in the coming days.

Nigerian sports officials have praised the depth of talent on display across the athletics team, describing the record breaking mixed relay performance as a particular highlight of the Games so far.
