ILISHAN-REMO — Afrobeats superstar Davido has visited Babcock University, his alma mater in Ogun State. The visit was widely covered on social media after videos showed the singer walking through the campus and interacting with students and staff.
Davido used the visit to send a direct message to young Nigerians. He said education is not a scam, pushing back against a popular saying among Nigerian youth that formal education does not guarantee success. He said his own experience shows that knowledge and credentials still matter.
“Education is not a scam. I went to school. I got my degree. It shaped who I am. Come to school, build yourself, and then build your career on top of that foundation,” Davido said during a brief address to students.
The pop star also pledged to invest in Babcock’s music department. He said he wants to help the university build world-class music facilities that can train the next generation of Nigerian music professionals. Details of the investment were not immediately disclosed.
A Symbolic Return
Davido graduated from Babcock University with a degree in Business Administration. He pursued music alongside his studies and rose to fame while still completing his degree. His story has made him a role model for young Nigerians who dream of careers in entertainment.
The visit comes at a time when Nigeria’s music industry is experiencing its biggest global moment. Burna Boy and Shakira just released the FIFA World Cup 2026 anthem. Afrobeats dominates international streaming charts. Davido himself remains one of the genre’s biggest global names.
Furthermore, university authorities welcomed Davido’s pledge. Babcock Vice-Chancellor Ademola Tayo said the institution is proud of its alumni and looks forward to working with Davido on the music department investment. He said the university is committed to expanding its arts and creative programmes.
A Broader Message
Davido’s visit is part of a growing trend among Nigerian celebrities using their platforms to advocate for education and youth development. Several Nollywood actors, musicians, and athletes have spoken out in recent months about the importance of formal education.
The message resonates especially after recent school abductions in Oyo and Borno states. Many Nigerians are questioning whether it is safe to send children to school. Celebrities stepping up to say education matters can help counter the fear and discouragement those events create.
Davido is expected to formalise his Babcock investment pledge through a memorandum of understanding with the university in the coming weeks. His management team said further details on the music department development plan will be announced before the end of June 2026.
