Tonight, Nollywood says goodbye — at least in Lagos.
A Service of Songs for late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo is being held this evening, Wednesday, June 10, at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, from 4pm to 6pm. Guests have been asked to wear white. The evening marks the first of several farewell events for an actor whose death at the age of 40 left Nigeria’s entertainment industry in deep grief.
A Life Cut Short
Alexx Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. He had been absent from public life for months before his passing, a silence that had worried fans and colleagues who noticed his disappearance from social media as far back as late 2024.
Born in Port Harcourt and originally from Arochukwu in Abia State, Ekubo rose to fame through a combination of charm, comic timing, and genuine dramatic range. He was a first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest. Moreover, he was recognised in 2020 as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 for his contributions to entertainment and social development.
The Industry Responds
Tributes poured in from across the Nollywood community when news of his death broke. Funke Akindele shared an emotional Instagram message. Peter Okoye, colleagues, and fans flooded social media with heartfelt words describing him as kind-hearted, jovial, and deeply talented.
KCee, reflecting on Ekubo’s passing, urged Nigerians to celebrate the living while they still can. His message resonated widely — a reminder that public appreciation should not wait for tragedy to arrive. Furthermore, it opened a wider conversation about mental health, cancer awareness, and the pressure on public figures to maintain appearances even when they are suffering.
What Comes After Tonight
Following tonight’s Service of Songs in Lagos, a wake keep is scheduled for June 17 in Arochukwu, Abia State. The funeral service and interment will take place on June 18 at Mary Slessor School, Amanagwu Village, in his home state.
Alexx Ekubo was 40 years old. He was loved. He will not be forgotten.
