White filled the room. Tears filled the eyes. And the voice of a man who made so many people laugh and cry on screen was remembered one more time.
Nollywood stars, gospel singers, family members, and fans gathered at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, on Wednesday evening, June 10, for the Service of Songs honouring late actor Alexx Ekubo. Guests wore white — a colour the family had requested as a symbol of the life and light Ekubo brought to everyone he met.
A Room Full of Love
The atmosphere was one of grief and gratitude in equal measure. Colleagues who had worked with Ekubo across decades of Nollywood took turns speaking and sharing memories. Gospel singers led the room in songs that reflected the deep faith Ekubo was known for. Meanwhile, friends described a man who was always present, always kind, and always genuinely interested in the people around him.
Funke Akindele, who had shared an emotional tribute when news of his death broke in May, was among those present. Others came from across the Nigerian entertainment community — a showing that reflected how widely respected and loved Ekubo had become over the course of his career.
The Man Behind the Roles
Alexx Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40, following a battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His death had come as a shock to many who had hoped his silence on social media was simply a period of rest rather than the sign of something serious.
Born in Port Harcourt and originally from Arochukwu in Abia State, Ekubo had been a first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria contest before building one of the most recognisable careers in Nollywood. Moreover, he had been recognised in 2020 as one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40. His achievements stretched well beyond his screen work.
What Comes Next
Following Wednesday’s Service of Songs, a wake keep is scheduled for June 17 in Arochukwu, Abia State. The funeral service and burial will take place on June 18 at Mary Slessor School in Amanagwu Village.
The farewells continue. The love does not stop. And Nollywood will carry Alexx Ekubo’s name forward for a very long time.
