Four names. One country. And a full takeover of the most important awards show in Black music. Nigeria has dominated the 2026 BET Awards nominations, with Wizkid, Tems, Burna Boy, and Asake leading the African contingent across multiple categories. The nominations, announced in May, confirm what many in the music industry have been saying for years, Afrobeats is no longer a guest at the global music table. It is a permanent resident.

Who Is Nominated and Where

Wizkid leads the Nigerian charge with nominations that span Best International Act and Best Album categories. Tems, whose global profile has risen dramatically since her Grammy win, is nominated in multiple categories including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. Burna Boy, fresh from headlining the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony alongside Shakira, continues to stack award recognition. Meanwhile, Asake, who recently dropped the joint EP Real Vol. 1 with Wizkid, adds his own nominations to the Nigerian total.

Together, these four artists represent the range and depth of what Afrobeats has become, from Wizkid’s smooth Afropop to Burna Boy’s raw Afrofusion, from Tems’s soulful R&B to Asake’s Afropop and amapiano blend.

What This Means for African Music

The BET Awards have historically been the most prominent platform for Black music globally. Consequently, Nigeria’s dominance of the nominations list sends a powerful message. Furthermore, it reflects a structural shift, not just individual talent breaking through, but a full ecosystem of artists, producers, and songwriters operating at the top of the global market.

Africa’s recorded music revenues grew 15.2 per cent in 2025, reaching $120 million according to IFPI’s Global Music Report 2026. Nigeria sits at the heart of that growth. As a result, the BET nominations are not just cultural recognition, they are economic validation.

The Awards and What Comes Next

The 2026 BET Awards ceremony is scheduled for later this month. Nigerian fans are already campaigning loudly on social media for their favourites. Whether or not the wins follow, the nominations alone confirm that Nigerian music is operating at the highest level the global industry has to offer.

Four Nigerian artists at the top of the most important Black music awards in the world. This is not a moment. This is a movement.
