POZNAN — Nigerian winger Taofeek Ismaheel has made history by helping Lech Poznan win the Polish Ekstraklasa title. He is the first Nigerian footballer to win the Polish league championship in 26 years. The last was achieved in 2000 by a Nigerian player at the same club.
Ismaheel was a key contributor throughout the Ekstraklasa season. His pace, directness, and goal contributions were crucial to Lech’s title challenge. The club clinched the championship on the final day of the season in dramatic fashion.
The Nigerian winger celebrated the achievement on social media after the final whistle. He said winning a league title is a dream come true. “Every footballer dreams of this moment. I am so grateful to my teammates, the coaches, and the amazing Lech Poznan fans,” Ismaheel posted on Instagram.
Ismaheel, who came through Lech’s youth academy, has developed into one of the most exciting young Nigerians playing club football in Europe. His performances this season have attracted interest from clubs in the German Bundesliga and the English Championship.
Part of a Nigerian Wave
Ismaheel’s title win adds to a remarkable week for Nigerian footballers in Europe. Kelechi Iheanacho helped Celtic clinch the Scottish Premiership on the final day. Ademola Lookman scored for Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Samuel Ogazi broke Nigeria’s 400m national record in the US.
In addition, Maduka Okoye has received glowing praise from his Udinese coach. The goalkeeper has had an impressive season in Italy’s Serie A. His consistent performances have made him one of the most highly regarded Nigerian goalkeepers in European football.
Furthermore, the Super Eagles benefit when Nigerian players are winning trophies and playing regularly at their clubs. Confidence built from winning at club level often transfers positively to international duty. Chelle will hope to channel that energy into the June friendlies.
Nigeria’s Domestic Football
Back home, the Nigeria Professional Football League is heading toward its final day. Rangers FC and Rivers United are level at the top of the table heading into a winner-takes-all final round. The NPFL title race is one of the most exciting in recent memory.
The Federation Cup is also progressing. Asaba has been confirmed as the host city for the grand finale. The round of 64 stage began last weekend with some high-scoring encounters. Organisers say the final will be one of the most well-attended domestic cup matches in years.
Sunday Oliseh, the former Super Eagles coach, has criticised the NPFL for failing to retain its best players. He said top Nigerian talent leaves for foreign leagues too quickly and that domestic clubs must do more to keep quality players in the league long enough to develop their games.
