Tinubu Meets EFCC Chairman Over Seized Properties
SHARE

President Bola Tinubu has met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to discuss issues surrounding seized properties and recent controversies in Osun State.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, followed public concerns after the EFCC froze certain assets in Osun, sparking debate over the management of confiscated properties.

According to sources familiar with the discussion, the President sought clarification on the Commission’s handling of seized houses and other assets, particularly in relation to legal procedures and ownership disputes. The engagement was described as part of Tinubu’s broader effort to ensure transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive.

The EFCC chairman reportedly briefed the President on ongoing investigations and explained the Commission’s position on the Osun matter. He assured that the EFCC remains committed to following due process in asset recovery and disposal.

Officials said the meeting also touched on strengthening collaboration between the EFCC and other government agencies to avoid conflicts over seized properties. Tinubu emphasized the need for clear communication and adherence to the rule of law in managing assets linked to corruption cases.

The Osun freeze row had drawn attention after reports emerged that properties allegedly tied to corruption were sealed, leading to questions about jurisdiction and the rights of affected parties. The EFCC maintained that its actions were lawful and aimed at preserving assets pending investigation.

Legal experts have noted that disputes over seized properties often arise due to overlapping claims between federal and state authorities. They argue that clearer guidelines are needed to prevent confusion and ensure that recovered assets benefit the public.

Civil society groups have also called for transparency in the disposal of confiscated properties, stressing that recovered assets should be used to improve infrastructure and social services.

The Presidency has not released an official statement on the outcome of the meeting, but insiders say Tinubu urged the EFCC to strengthen its processes and maintain public trust.

The development highlights the challenges Nigeria faces in asset recovery, where legal complexities and political interests sometimes overshadow anti-corruption efforts.

For now, the meeting between Tinubu and the EFCC chairman signals a renewed push to streamline the management of seized properties and ensure that anti-corruption measures remain credible and effective.
