The United States is hopeful thHormuz at a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz will be reached today or tomorrow, a top US official said Tuesday, hours after yet another cargo ship was hit in the vital waterway.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told broadcaster CNBC there is a chance a deal could be reached in the coming hours, a day after President Donald Trump said the strait might reopen on Tuesday.
Speaking from the White House on Monday, Trump combined bullish optimism about diplomacy with bellicose warnings, describing the situation as Iran’s last chance before what he termed decapitation.

Trump said negotiations with Iran were ongoing despite Tehran’s denials, adding that he had agreed to continue pursuing talks at the request of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and other regional countries.
Iran’s foreign ministry denied on Monday that negotiations with Washington were taking place, though Trump insisted talks were continuing, telling reporters “we are talking right now.”
Global energy markets remain highly sensitive to developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a corridor that typically carries about a fifth of the world’s oil supply, with any resolution expected to significantly ease pressure on oil prices.
