President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Team Nigeria for their outstanding performance at the Commonwealth Games, where the athletes secured 24 medals across various sporting events. He pledged increased government investment in sports development to build on the achievement and strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu described the athletes’ performance as a demonstration of resilience, discipline, and national pride. He noted that the medal haul reflects Nigeria’s potential in global sports and promised that his administration will provide more resources to support athletes and sporting institutions.

Team Nigeria’s 24 medals included gold, silver, and bronze across athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, and table tennis. The victories placed Nigeria among the top-performing African nations at the Games. Officials from the Ministry of Sports highlighted that the success was the result of months of preparation, training camps, and support from coaches and technical staff.

Tinubu assured that sports will receive greater attention in national planning. He emphasised that investment will not only focus on elite athletes but also grassroots development. According to him, nurturing young talents across schools and communities is critical to sustaining Nigeria’s dominance in athletics and other disciplines.

The President outlined plans to improve infrastructure, including modern training facilities and stadium upgrades. He also pledged to strengthen partnerships with private investors to ensure sustainable funding for sports. Tinubu stressed that sports can serve as a tool for youth empowerment, job creation, and national unity.

Several athletes expressed gratitude for the recognition and urged the government to follow through on its promises. They noted that consistent funding, better facilities, and international exposure are essential to maintain Nigeria’s competitive edge. Wrestlers and sprinters in particular highlighted the need for improved medical support and training equipment.

Sports analysts say Nigeria’s performance at the Commonwealth Games underscores the country’s potential to excel globally if systemic challenges are addressed. They argue that poor infrastructure, irregular funding, and limited grassroots programmes have hindered progress in the past. Tinubu’s pledge, they noted, could mark a turning point if implemented effectively.

Beyond medals, the success has boosted national morale and inspired young athletes across Nigeria. The Games also provided exposure for Nigerian sports professionals, opening opportunities for international contracts and collaborations. Observers believe that sustained investment could position Nigeria as a powerhouse in athletics, wrestling, and emerging sports.

The Ministry of Sports confirmed that preparations are already underway for upcoming international competitions, including the Olympics. Officials said the Commonwealth Games success will serve as a foundation for future campaigns, with emphasis on talent scouting and structured training programmes.
