For some time before Sunday, May 10, the people living around the family’s home in Nchatancha had reportedly noticed things that disturbed them. Amanda, they say, was treated with cruelty that they found hard to watch. What happened that afternoon was the point of no return. By 3 p.m., the little girl was gone.
The Arrest
By Monday morning, Mrs. Ogechi John was in police custody. The Enugu State Government, acting on information shared on Governor Peter Mbah’s official media platform, confirmed the arrest. John, identified as being from Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, is accused of child homicide.
The Government’s Response
The state’s Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, did not mince words. She said the Mbah administration had zero tolerance for this kind of act and that the government would not rest until justice was served swiftly.

Amanda’s story spread quickly online, drawing grief and anger from Nigerians across the country. Child rights advocates have called for stronger enforcement of protection laws and faster prosecution of abuse cases.
