LAGOS — Former Big Brother Naija housemate Queen Mercy Atang has revealed that the viral bread-shaped dress she wore to the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards gave her a severe back injury. The revelation has generated both sympathy and amusement across Nigerian social media.

Queen Mercy made the disclosure in a candid interview published on Sunday. She said the elaborate costume, which was designed to look like a loaf of bread and attracted enormous attention at the AMVCA ceremony, was far heavier than most people realised. The structural framework required to maintain the bread shape put extreme pressure on her spine.

“People saw the dress and thought it was funny and creative, which it was. But nobody saw what it cost me. That thing was so heavy. By the time the ceremony was over, my back was in agony. I have been dealing with the injury since that night,” Queen Mercy said in the interview.

The bread dress became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the AMVCA 2026 ceremony. Images and videos of the costume went massively viral across Nigerian and international entertainment platforms. Several international fashion blogs covered the story.

Fashion at a Cost

Queen Mercy’s story highlights the physical demands that ambitious fashion choices can impose on the people who wear them. Nigerian entertainment events have increasingly become theatrical fashion showcases where celebrities and influencers compete to make the most striking visual statement.

Costume designers and fashion experts said the bread dress required an internal structural framework of wood, wire, and foam to maintain its shape and proportions. The total weight of such a costume can easily exceed 15 to 20 kilograms. Wearing that kind of weight for several hours, particularly while posing for photographs and walking on a red carpet, places enormous strain on the lower back.

Furthermore, the AMVCA fashion competition has become one of Nigerian entertainment’s most anticipated events. Each year, attendees try to outdo previous years’ most memorable looks. The escalating ambition of AMVCA fashion means costumes are becoming increasingly elaborate, heavy, and potentially dangerous to wear.

Recovery and Reflection

Queen Mercy said she is receiving medical treatment for her back injury and is on the road to recovery. She said she does not regret wearing the dress because it generated the attention and conversation she intended. However, she said she will think more carefully about the physical implications of future fashion choices.

Her revelation sparked a broader conversation about the unseen physical costs of spectacular fashion. Several Nigerian celebrities commented on social media, sharing their own experiences of uncomfortable, heavy, or painful outfits at major events.

The conversation also touched on the pressure that female entertainers in Nigeria feel to make increasingly dramatic public appearances. Mental health advocates said the competitive pressure of public visibility in Nigeria’s entertainment industry comes with real physical and psychological costs that are rarely discussed openly.
