Osun Election: 15,000 Police Deploy to Secure August 15 Poll

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the deployment of 15,000 personnel to Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election. The deployment includes senior officers such as Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs), and Commissioners of Police (CPs), underscoring the scale of security arrangements for the poll.

According to police authorities, the deployment is aimed at ensuring peace, preventing violence, and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process. The Inspector-General of Police directed that officers be stationed across all local government areas, with special focus on flashpoints identified during past elections.

DIGs, AIGs, and CPs will oversee operations in different zones of the state. Their presence is expected to enhance coordination and accountability among deployed personnel. The police leadership emphasised that the officers will work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies.

The police highlighted that the deployment is part of a broader plan to prevent ballot snatching, intimidation of voters, and disruption of polling units. Special tactical units, including mobile police and intelligence operatives, will be on standby to respond to emergencies.

Authorities assured that the police will remain neutral and professional throughout the election. The Inspector-General warned officers against partisanship, stressing that any misconduct will attract disciplinary action. He urged citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report suspicious activities.

The police confirmed that they are working closely with INEC to secure sensitive materials, including ballot papers and result sheets. Escort teams have been assigned to ensure safe delivery of materials to polling centres.

Civil society organisations welcomed the deployment but urged the police to prioritise the protection of voters. They cautioned against excessive use of force and called for transparency in handling election-related incidents.

Political analysts say the scale of deployment reflects the importance of the Osun election in Nigeria’s political landscape. They argue that while heavy security presence can deter violence, it must be balanced with respect for citizens’ rights.

As the election date approaches, the police reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order. The success of the deployment will be measured by the ability of voters to cast their ballots freely and safely.
