He was moving weapons that could have killed many people. He did not get far enough.

The Department of State Services arrested a man described as a notorious arms courier in Kano State on June 12, 2026, seizing a significant cache of weapons that security analysts say could have caused serious harm if they had reached their intended destination. The arrested individual was found in possession of three AK-47 rifles, four RPG tubes, and quantities of ammunition.

Three AK-47 rifles. Four rocket propelled grenade tubes. Ammunition. These are not small arms casually acquired. RPG tubes in particular are military grade weapons whose presence in the hands of non-state actors is deeply alarming. They are designed to take out armoured vehicles and fortified positions.

The recovery suggests that the courier was part of a supply network moving heavy weapons into or through northern Nigeria. Kano, as a major commercial and transit hub, is a frequent interception point for contraband moving between the northwest and other parts of the country. As a result, this arrest is not just about one man with three rifles. It is about disrupting a pipeline.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended the DSS for the arrest, describing the operation as a major step in the ongoing fight against arms trafficking in the state. He called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence, noting that this arrest was a direct result of information sharing between citizens and the DSS.

Furthermore, the governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with all security agencies to prevent the inflow of illegal weapons that fuel banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence across the region.

The Bigger Weapons Problem

Nigeria has a serious illegal weapons problem. Armed groups across the northwest and northeast have demonstrated access to military grade equipment that should not be in civilian hands. Each arrest of a courier or logistics provider represents one less supply line feeding that crisis.

The DSS has not released information about whether the arrested courier has been linked to any specific bandit group or previous attacks. However, investigations are ongoing. For the communities of Kano and the surrounding region, this week’s arrest is a small but meaningful moment of security in a landscape that needs many more of them.
