ABUJA — The court martial of 36 Nigerian military officers charged with plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu has resumed in Abuja. The proceedings are being held at a military installation in the capital. No media access has been allowed.

The alleged coup was reportedly planned for October 1, 2025, Nigeria’s Independence Day. Authorities say the plotters intended to strike during the national parade, which Tinubu was expected to attend. The event was cancelled at the last minute without any public explanation.

The military initially denied any knowledge of a coup attempt. However, in January 2026, the Defence Headquarters announced that a number of officers would face court martial for plotting to overthrow the government. That announcement confirmed what many had suspected.

Separately, six civilians are also on trial at Abuja’s Federal High Court for their alleged role in the plot. They include retired Major-General Mohammed Ibrahim Gana and a serving police inspector, Ahmed Ibrahim. All six have pleaded not guilty to charges of terrorism and treason.

The Mastermind Named

Authorities have named Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji as the mastermind of the plot. The 13-count charge sheet says suspects conspired to levy war against the state and to overthrow the president. It also alleges that some suspects knowingly supported terrorist acts.

Former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva is also accused. Authorities say he helped conceal the plot. However, Sylva remains at large. A warrant for his arrest has been issued. His whereabouts are not publicly known.

Nigeria has a long history of military coups. The country experienced five coups in the 20th century. However, democracy has held since 1999. This alleged plot is the most serious threat to civilian rule in over two decades.

Trial Conducted in Secret

The court martial is taking place behind closed doors. Military spokesperson Major General Samaila Uba said no media will be allowed into the proceedings at any sitting. The decision has drawn criticism from press freedom advocates.

However, the government says secrecy is necessary to protect national security information. Officials say some evidence relates to intelligence methods and sources that cannot be disclosed publicly.

Tinubu reshuffled Nigeria’s top military leadership shortly after the coup plot was uncovered. Political analysts say the reshuffle was designed to stabilise the armed forces and place more loyal officers in key command positions. The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks.
