The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly has resigned from his position, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the legislative arm of government.

The resignation, announced during plenary in Benin City, was formally communicated to lawmakers through a letter. The Speaker cited political realignment and the need to maintain stability within the Assembly as reasons for stepping down.

Deputy Speaker and other principal officers confirmed receipt of the resignation letter, noting that the decision was accepted in the interest of legislative harmony. Lawmakers immediately began deliberations on the process of electing a new Speaker to fill the vacant position.

Sources within the Assembly said the resignation was not unexpected, as internal discussions about leadership restructuring had been ongoing. Some members argued that the move was necessary to strengthen unity ahead of upcoming political activities in the state.

A senior lawmaker explained that the Assembly must remain focused on its legislative duties despite political pressures. “The resignation is part of the democratic process. What matters now is ensuring that the House continues to function effectively,” he said.

Political observers believe the development could influence alignments within Edo politics, particularly as the state prepares for future elections. Analysts say leadership changes in the Assembly often reflect broader political strategies among parties and stakeholders.

Civil society groups monitoring governance in Edo have urged the Assembly to prioritise transparency in selecting new leadership. They emphasised that the legislature plays a critical role in oversight and lawmaking, and must remain stable to serve citizens effectively.

The Edo State House of Assembly has faced challenges in recent years, including disputes over membership and leadership positions. However, lawmakers insist that the current transition will be managed peacefully to avoid disruption.

As the Assembly prepares to elect a new Speaker, residents of Edo State are watching closely to see how the change will affect legislative priorities. Issues such as infrastructure, education, and economic development remain high on the agenda for the House.

The resignation underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, where leadership positions can shift rapidly in response to internal and external pressures. For Edo State, the focus now is on ensuring that the Assembly remains a stable and effective institution.
