JOS — A fatal road accident involving a tricycle near Lamingo Golf Club in Jos has killed one person and injured three others. Punch reported the crash on Monday. Eyewitnesses and emergency responders cited pothole-ridden road conditions as a major contributing factor to the accident.

The tricycle, a common form of urban transportation in Jos, lost control after hitting a pothole at speed and overturned. The passengers were thrown from the vehicle. One died at the scene. Three others were taken to the nearest medical facility with varying degrees of injury.

The Federal Road Safety Corps said it deployed officers to the scene and assisted with the evacuation of injured passengers. The FRSC area commander called on motorists and tricycle operators to reduce speed on roads with poor surfaces and to be particularly vigilant around known pothole clusters in the city.

Nigeria’s Road Safety Crisis

Road accidents kill approximately 40,000 Nigerians annually, making the country one of the world’s most dangerous for road users. Potholes, overloaded vehicles, speeding, and poor road design are among the leading causes. The Jos crash is a small data point in a much larger and largely unaddressed public safety emergency.

Plateau State roads have deteriorated significantly in recent years. Rainfall, heavy truck traffic, and inadequate maintenance have created dangerous surfaces across the state. Several road improvement projects have been announced but implementation has been slow.

The FRSC said it is intensifying its public education campaigns in June ahead of the Sallah return journey traffic surge. It has deployed additional officers to accident-prone spots on major roads and is conducting vehicle roadworthiness checks at key checkpoints.
