ABUJA — The Federal Government has signed contracts worth over N690 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of major roads across four states. The signing took place at the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
Minister of Works David Umahi said the projects reflect the government’s commitment to modern infrastructure. He said Nigeria is now building roads using rigid pavement technology designed to last up to 100 years.
“Our vision is to build roads that will last for generations. We are determined to deliver infrastructure that can serve Nigerians for up to 100 years,” Umahi said at the signing ceremony.
Four contracts make up the N690.8 billion package. J. Patel and Sons Nigeria Limited secured N178.1 billion for the reconstruction of the 122-kilometre Mando-Birnin Gwari Road in Kaduna State. That road is a key corridor linking communities across the north-west.
South-West Projects Dominate
The largest single contract goes to JRB Construction Company Limited. The firm received N295.9 billion to dualise the 114.5-kilometre Ibadan-Ijebu Ode Road linking Oyo and Ogun states. That corridor carries heavy commercial and passenger traffic daily.
In Osun State, Truecrete Solutions Limited secured N101.8 billion for the 70-kilometre Osogbo-Ikirun-Akoda Road. In addition, Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Limited received N114.8 billion for the 73-kilometre Osogbo-Iwo-Ibadan Road connecting Osun and Oyo states.
Umahi commended the selected contractors for their past performance. He urged them to move to site immediately and maintain steady progress within agreed timelines. He warned that cost variations would not be accepted unless contractually justified.
What It Means for Nigeria
Nigeria’s road infrastructure deficit remains one of its biggest development challenges. Poor road connectivity raises supply chain costs and limits economic activity across regions. Better roads reduce travel time, lower fuel consumption, and open markets.
The Ibadan-Ijebu Ode corridor is particularly important. It links key economic hubs in the south-west and connects inland commercial centres to coastal logistics networks. Improved access along that route is expected to boost trade significantly.
Furthermore, the Mando-Birnin Gwari Road in Kaduna was a campaign promise made by President Tinubu during the 2023 elections. Its reconstruction is therefore both a practical and political priority for the administration heading into 2027.
