Coastal Road Project Hit as Vandals Steal 1,800 Manhole Covers
SHARE

Authorities have reported that suspected vandals have stolen 1,800 manhole covers and destroyed a one-kilometre stretch of fencing along Nigeria’s coastal road project, raising concerns about infrastructure security and public safety.

The incident, which occurred along sections of the newly constructed road, has drawn sharp criticism from government officials and residents. The theft of manhole covers poses serious risks to motorists and pedestrians, while the destruction of fencing undermines efforts to protect the project from encroachment.

Officials from the Ministry of Works confirmed the damage during an inspection tour. They described the act as sabotage and warned that such incidents could delay completion timelines and increase repair costs.

A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “This is not just theft; it is an attack on public infrastructure. The stolen manhole covers endanger lives, and repairing the damaged fence will require additional funds.”

Residents living near the project expressed frustration, noting that vandalism has become a recurring problem on public works. Some urged the government to deploy more security personnel to safeguard the road.

Civil society groups have also condemned the incident, stressing that vandalism of public infrastructure undermines national development. They called for stronger community engagement to protect projects and ensure accountability.

Analysts say the theft highlights broader challenges in Nigeria’s infrastructure management, where projects often face risks from vandalism, theft, and poor maintenance. They argue that without effective monitoring, investments in roads and other facilities may fail to deliver long-term benefits.

The coastal road project, seen as a major investment in Nigeria’s transport network, is expected to ease traffic congestion and boost economic activities along coastal communities. However, repeated vandalism could slow progress and increase costs.

Security experts have recommended the use of surveillance technology, community policing, and stricter penalties to deter vandals. They argue that protecting infrastructure is as important as building it.

For now, repair works are underway to replace the stolen manhole covers and rebuild the damaged fence. Authorities say they are working with local communities to prevent further incidents.

The coastal road project remains a critical part of Nigeria’s infrastructure drive, but the latest vandalism underscores the urgent need for stronger protection measures to safeguard public investments.
