They wore uniforms that did not belong to them. They tried to gather pupils as if conducting a drill. The army arrived before they could finish.
Nigerian Army troops foiled a mass abduction attempt at a primary school in Kogi State after terrorists disguised as soldiers attempted to assemble pupils, killing one attacker and preventing what could have become another devastating school kidnapping. The attack, confirmed in reporting by TELL Magazine, represents a disturbing evolution in tactics by armed groups targeting Nigerian schools.
The Disguise Tactic
The attackers reportedly wore military style uniforms to gain the trust of school staff and pupils, a tactic that has previously been used by armed groups elsewhere in Nigeria to lower the guard of intended victims before an attack. Their goal appeared to be assembling pupils under the false pretence of an official exercise before moving them away from the school premises.
However, genuine military personnel responded to the scene before the attackers could complete their plan. A firefight ensued, resulting in the death of one of the disguised terrorists. The remaining attackers fled the area, and security forces have since launched operations to track them down.
Why This Attack Matters
Nigeria has experienced a painful pattern of school based kidnappings over the past decade, beginning with the 2014 Chibok abduction and continuing through the recent Oyo State kidnapping of more than 40 students and teachers. Each incident has deepened national anxiety about the safety of children in school.
The use of military disguises in this latest attempt represents an escalation in sophistication that should concern security planners. If armed groups can convincingly impersonate soldiers, schools and communities may struggle to distinguish genuine security presence from a threat disguised as protection.
The Military Response
The Nigerian Army’s rapid response in this instance prevented what could have been a mass casualty or mass abduction event. Troops continue to operate in the area, and additional security measures are reportedly being considered for schools in the wider region.
For the pupils and teachers who narrowly avoided abduction, this was a near miss that could easily have ended differently. For Nigeria’s security planners, it is a clear signal that school protection strategies must evolve as quickly as the tactics being used against them.
