SOKOTO — The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has issued a strong condemnation of the lynching of a woman identified as Ummulkhair and demanded a thorough investigation into police conduct surrounding the incident. Vanguard’s June 29 headlines confirmed the Sultan’s statement, which was described as unusually direct in its criticism of both mob violence and the institutional response.

The Sultan met with the deceased’s husband, Malam Aliyu, and other family members, expressing heartfelt sympathy and praying for the repose of Ummulkhair’s soul. He asked Almighty Allah to grant the bereaved family the strength and patience to bear the loss, while making clear that the manner of the death and questions about how authorities handled the situation demand answers.

“The killing of any innocent person is a grave injustice. What happened to Ummulkhair cannot be swept under the rug. I demand a full and transparent investigation into how this happened and into the conduct of those whose duty it was to protect her,” the Sultan said, in remarks carried by multiple news outlets.

The Incident

Ummulkhair was reportedly the victim of mob violence. The specific circumstances that led to her being targeted by the mob have not been fully detailed in available reports, but the Sultan’s specific demand for a probe into police conduct suggests questions about whether security personnel present could have or should have intervened more effectively to prevent her death.

Mob justice incidents in northern Nigeria have been a recurring concern, with communities sometimes taking extrajudicial action against individuals accused of various offences before any formal legal process can take place. Such incidents often result in deaths that are never fully investigated or prosecuted.

A Call for Accountability

The Sultan’s intervention gives the demand for accountability significant moral authority. His standing as both the foremost traditional ruler in northern Nigeria and the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims means his call for a transparent police probe carries weight that ordinary civil society demands may not. Human rights groups said they hope the Sultan’s statement produces a more credible investigation than such incidents typically receive.
