Tinubu Grants Customs 6 Month Tenure Extension to Feb 2027

President Bola Tinubu granted a final six-month tenure extension to the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, from his original expiry date of August 1, 2026, to February 2027, the Presidency confirmed this weekend, citing the need to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window programme.

A statement from the State House described the extension as necessary to allow Adeniyi to see through critical reforms underway at the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly the National Single Window initiative, which is designed to streamline trade facilitation and reduce the time and cost of doing business at Nigeria’s ports and border crossings. The extension is described as final, meaning no further renewals are expected.

Adeniyi has overseen a period of significant transformation at the Nigeria Customs Service, including the rollout of digital systems, enhanced revenue collection frameworks, and improved anti-smuggling operations. Customs revenue has risen sharply under his watch, contributing meaningfully to federal government earnings in a period when the administration has prioritised revenue expansion as a cornerstone of its fiscal reform agenda.

However, transparency advocates said tenure extensions at the Nigeria Customs Service must be accompanied by continued performance accountability and clear succession planning to avoid institutional continuity risks. They said the single window implementation, while important, should not become a reason for repeated delays in leadership transition at the agency.

Meanwhile, the Presidency also issued condolences over the death of Audu Sule Katagum, Wazirin Katagum and former Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, who died on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the age of 69. President Tinubu described him as a dedicated public servant. Furthermore, Tinubu congratulated the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, on his 85th birthday, describing him as a symbol of unity, grace, and integrity in the South East.
