Nasarawa North Senatorial Bye-Election Holds, Materials Arrive Early
SHARE

The bye-election for the Nasarawa North Senatorial District held on Saturday, June 21, 2026, with electoral materials arriving at polling units as early as 8:00 a.m., INEC officials confirmed, in one of several bye-elections conducted across the country alongside the Ekiti State governorship election.

Vanguard reported that the early arrival of materials in Nasarawa North was an encouraging sign of logistical improvement by the commission compared to past exercises where late material deployment disrupted voting schedules. Security agencies confirmed that deployment to polling units in the district was also completed without significant incident.

INEC conducted several senatorial and federal constituency bye-elections on June 21 alongside the Ekiti vote. The commission said the simultaneous conduct of multiple elections in a single day demonstrated Nigeria’s growing electoral management capacity and reduced the administrative cost of holding separate polls.

However, voter turnout in the Nasarawa North bye-election remained a concern, with initial field reports suggesting a lower-than-expected number of accredited voters at several polling units. INEC said it would release a full statistical breakdown of participation levels once results were fully collated and verified across all polling units in the senatorial district.

Notably, INEC used the Ekiti election period to announce new dates for the 2027 general elections, following its successful appeal against court judgments that had earlier altered its proposed timetable. The commission said firm dates would be published in the coming weeks after completion of required consultations. Consequently, Nigeria’s electoral calendar is now beginning to take definitive shape as the country moves from the Ekiti and Nasarawa bye-elections toward the larger and more complex 2027 cycle.
