The order came down on June 14. By June 16, criminal hideouts in Matazu were burning.
Troops of Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have been destroying bandit camps, logistics bases, and criminal infrastructure across Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State since the launch of Operation CLEAN SWEEP III on June 14, 2026. The offensive was triggered by the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in bandit captivity on June 13 after being abducted alongside his wife on May 30.
On the Ground in Matazu
According to the task force’s Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, troops have moved into multiple locations across Matazu and its adjoining communities, targeting the specific networks believed to be responsible for Abubakar’s abduction and the broader criminal ecosystem that sustains bandit operations in the area.
Hideouts have been destroyed. Logistics bases — the structures that armed groups use to store weapons, food, and equipment — have been dismantled. Troops are maintaining an aggressive operational tempo to deny the bandits any opportunity to regroup or relocate to new positions. Furthermore, aerial reconnaissance assets are being used to track movement in the surrounding terrain.
The General’s Wife
One detail in this story that has received less attention than it deserves is that Hajiya Amina Abubakar, the retired general’s wife, was also abducted alongside her husband on May 30. She remains in bandit captivity as of this report. Operation CLEAN SWEEP III is therefore not only about justice for General Rabe. It is also an active rescue mission for a woman whose name has largely been absent from the headlines.
The military has not yet confirmed details about her condition or the progress of efforts to secure her release. However, sources indicate that her safe recovery is among the primary operational objectives of the current offensive.
The Broader Message
The launch of a named, dedicated military operation specifically in response to the killing of a retired general sends a signal. It says that the death of a senior military officer in bandit captivity is not something that will be absorbed quietly. It will be answered with force, focus, and accountability.
Whether Operation CLEAN SWEEP III will achieve its objectives depends on factors that are difficult to assess from outside — intelligence quality, terrain, the movement of the specific groups involved. However, the intent is clear. And for the people of Matazu, who have lived with banditry for years, the sight of military units moving through their communities with purpose is at minimum a sign that the country has not forgotten them.
