Zamfara Troops Kill Terrorist, Arrest Eight in Fresh Operations

Another week. Another operation. Another set of results from Nigeria’s security forces in the northwest.

Troops of Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised a suspected terrorist and arrested eight suspected bandits in separate operations across Zamfara State, the military announced on June 8, 2026. The operations, conducted between June 5 and 6, recovered motorcycles, communication equipment, mobile phones, and military-style uniforms from the suspects.

The first operation took place on June 5, when troops of Sector 2 conducted a fighting patrol to Birnin Tsaba and Tsanu villages in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. They encountered terrorists at Birnin Tsaba village. A firefight followed, resulting in the death of one suspected terrorist. Seven motorcycles were recovered from the scene.

In a separate operation on June 6, troops conducting a patrol to Tudun Wada and Dan Gulbi communities in Maru Local Government Area arrested eight suspected bandits at Tudun Wada. Items recovered from the group included seven motorcycles, communication gadgets, mobile phones, power banks, and military-style uniforms. A structure used by the suspects was also destroyed.

Targeting the Supply Chain of Violence

Military analysts note that the recovery of military-style uniforms is particularly significant. Armed groups in Nigeria’s northwest have increasingly adopted quasi-military dress to create confusion during attacks and to intimidate communities. Disrupting their access to such equipment forms a key part of the counter-banditry strategy.

Furthermore, the arrest of a suspected ammunition recipient in Shinkafi Local Government Area during the same operation period shows that troops are targeting the logistics networks that keep bandit groups operational — not just the fighters themselves. As a result, the overall pressure on criminal networks across the region is intensifying.

Citizen Group Calls for More

The Society for Citizens Safety, a civic group, released a statement on Monday praising recent military successes and urging the Armed Forces to maintain their momentum. The group cited the rescue of 360 abducted residents in Borno State as evidence that determined military action can deliver results.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA says operations will continue. For communities in Zamfara that have lived with the threat of bandit attacks for years, every operation that degrades those networks is a step toward the peace they deserve.
